Eagles Mere churches and "The Kingdom, the Power and the Glory"

Dear Eagles Mere churches:
I am a long time vacationer in Eagles Mere and a lapsed Episcopalian.
I believe religion and politics are badly infecting each other in the United States today.
I have no idea about the extent to which you agree, if at all.
Regardless, I wish to urge you to watch the below video, which  is a discussion with Tim Alberta concerning his new book The Kingdom, the Power and the Glory.
If you watch the video, I would next ask you to consider whether it would be constructive from the perspective of both religion and politics for the video to be watched by an appropriate group at your church, followed by discussion.
I will understand if you think the video is inappropriate for your church's purposes.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck

Dear Mr. Nelson,
Long ago I spent my freshman year at Bucknell. I have several Bucknell acquaintances from Eagles Mere PA, where I have been a longtime summer vacationer.
Recently I sent/posted a letter to Eagles Mere's churches concerning Tim Alberta's new book The Kingdom, the Power and the Glory. In particular, I urged them to view the video at https://www.msnbc.com/morning-joe/watch/writer-details-how-evangelicals-confronted-him-about-trump-at-his-father-s-funeral-199309381624, and have a group discussion about the same at their church. (The letter I sent/posted to the Eagles Mere churches can be found at https://bloggingeagle1.blogspot.com/2023/12/eagles-mere-churches-and-kingdom-power.html.)
My letter has gotten no reaction, including no reaction from Bucknell acquaintances whom I informed about the letter (with one exception).
If Bucknell's chaplains think what I am doing is inappropriate, I would be interested in their telling me that.
I think what I am doing is legitimate and justified, but I want to be respectful, and sending you this email can help me in my belief that I am being respectful, including possibly causing me to doubt my belief.
Thank you for reading this email.

Subject: Trump's campaign of terror against immigrants
Dear St. Francis Xavier parish office:
My wife and I attend the 8:30 mass at St, Francis most Sundays.
I think Trump is conducting a campaign of terror in America against immigrants.
Perhaps millions of Americans support this terror campaign.
I think, however, an overwhelming majority of Americans do not believe that is what America is about, and they do not support Trump's terror campaign.
I think such overwhelming majority of Americans should speak up against Trump's terror campaign and say publicly that Trump should cease his terror campaign.
I am trying to speak up against Trump's terror campaign, and that is the reason for this email, to wit, I would like to connect with St. Francis parishioners who think Trump should cease his terror campaign.
I hope this email is not out of place.
If this email is out of place, please feel free to disregard it.
Otherwise, I hope I can connect with St. Francis parishioners who feel that Trump should cease his terror campaign against immigrants, and the parish office can aid me in doing that.
Thank you very much.

Email to Dartmouth Lawyers Association

From: Rob Shattuck <rdshatt@aol.com>

Sent: Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at 06:13:14 PM CST
Subject: Dartmouth Lawyers Association and the ABA Task Force for American Democracy

Dear ____ and _____,

I am a retired lawyer in Alabama and Dartmouth class of 1969.

I have been advocating for the Alabama State Bar to undertake supportive activities in Alabama relative to the American Bar Association Task Force for American Democracy and its year long mission that is set out at https://www.americanbar.org/groups/leadership/office_of_the_president/american-democracy/overview/.

Recently, I thought the great attention that was being paid to this past week's GOP Presidential primary debate at the University of Alabama was an excellent opportunity for the Alabama State Bar (and other parties) to partake of the Task Force's mission to "host public conversations with a broad spectrum of Americans to hear their concerns, experiences, and suggestions for restoring and preserving our democracy rule of law." https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2023/11/presidential-debate-in-tuscaloosa-aba.html

The attention surrounding the Dec. 6th debate in Alabama is now past, and national attention is on New Hampshire and its lead off Republican primary election.

Yesterday I sent the below email to the New Hampshire Bar Association urging it to avail of the national attention now on New Hampshire to host public conversations in New Hampshire with a broad spectrum of New Hampshire residents to hear their "concerns, experiences, and suggestions for restoring and preserving our democracy rule of law."

I think Dartmouth should be a venue in New Hampshire for such a public conversations to take place. If the Dartmouth Lawyers Association agrees, and can give me suggestions of whom to contact at Dartmouth to try to instigate the holding of such a public conversation at Dartmouth, I would be most appreciative.

Also, to the extent the Dartmouth Lawyers Association thinks it should be suggested to members of the Association that they undertake activities in their respective states in support of the ABA Task Force's mission, it would be great to communicate that suggestion to the members.

Thank you very much for your attention to this email.

Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck

I am very impressed by Bucknell University's Commitment to Free Expression and note that the 2023-24 Bucknell Forum has the theme of “Freedom of Expression.”
I am involved with the Braver Angels organization, which is dedicated "to bring[ing] conservatives and progressives together on equal terms to understand our differences, find common ground where it exists, and help the country we all love find a better way." https://braverangels.org/
One Luke Alley, whom I know from Eagles Mere and who is at Denison University, is active in College Debates and Discourse Program partners with Denison – The Denisonian, which has partnered with Braver Angels.
I have been trying to promote Braver Angels type conversations in Eagles Mere.
The purpose of this email is to bring Braver Angels to the attention of Bucknell (if Braver Angels does not already have a presence on the Bucknell campus) and to be used by me in promoting Braver Angels type conversations in Eagles Mere.

Dear President Weinberg:
I read your November 13th and October 11th letters to the Denison University community that seek to grapple with the extreme problems that have arisen on college campuses in connection with the war between Israel and Hamas.
As bad as that is, there is also a building threat of violence in the United States over Donald Trump, and this is likely to be in increased need of grappling with on college campuses, as well as in the country at large, in 2024.
In the foregoing regard, I borrow and modify a sentence from your November 13th letter in the following way:
"As we each try to understand the [debilitating partisan divide in the United States that is threatening violence in 2024], I would encourage us to work together to lean into our liberal arts roots in at least five ways."
In that vein in connection with the 2024 election, I have contacted the Presidents of Dartmouth College, the University of Iowa, the University of New Hampshire, the University of South Carolina and Clemson University, urging them to speak up in support of the year long mission of the American Bar Association Task Force for American Democracy that is set out at https://www.americanbar.org/groups/leadership/office_of_the_president/american-democracy/overview/ For information on this, please read https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2023/12/iowa-caucuses-new-hampshire-primary.html.
I think the mission of the American Bar Association Task Force for American Democracy is worthy of being the basis of a letter from you to the Denison community in the New Year. I hope you agree.
Lest you wonder how this Alabamian wound up emailing Denison University at this juncture, I refer you to https://bloggingeagle1.blogspot.com/2023/10/em-braver-angels-and-bucknell.html.

I am addressing this email to Professor Nachlis because he is identified as the moderator of the January 8th discussion by Rep. Jamie Raskin of "the historic stakes of the 2024 election, and its potential impact on the future of American democracy," and to Dean Smith and Ms. Clemens because they are co-leaders of the newly announced Dartmouth Dialogues initiative and its Dialogues Project.
I have previously been in touch with Mr. Robert Coates and Professor Linda Fowler, and even sent a December 25th email to President Beilock related to the Cheney and Raskin speaking events, urging her to issue a statement to the College calling attention to the perilous condition the United States is in, the importance of democracy in the country's moving through said perilous condition, and the special opportunity the Dartmouth community has in January to have much timely conversation about democracy. (You can find emails at Be An Alabama Rootstriker* with Rob Shattuck: Iowa caucuses; NH and SC primaries (al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com).
President Beilock's January 3rd "Winter welcome" email to the Dartmouth community sets its theme with the words "we continue to face conflict around the world and deep divisions here in the U.S." and announces there will be a rolling out of a "Dartmouth Dialogues” initiative. President Beilock's January 10th update formally announces "Dartmouth Dialogues" as "our shared commitment to expanding programming across the institution dedicated to facilitating conversations and skills that bridge political and personal divides."
In Alabama, I am making a simple plea of "Come ye Trumpers and anti-Trumpers, let us gather together and talk to one another." Be An Alabama Rootstriker* with Rob Shattuck: Come ye Trumpers and anti-Trumpers (al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com)
I suggest that the foregoing simple plea could be made a component in the Dialogues Project.

Dear Richard Johnson

Dear Richard,

In your September 29th Facebook post, you say, "We have to bring the people in the middle together to stop this madness or the extremes will tear it [our country] apart."

Your Facebook post shows 66 likes and 26 comments.

My recent (and earlier) Blogging Eagle Facebook posts evidence that I deeply share your sentiment that "We have to bring the people in the middle together to stop this madness or the extremes will tear it [our country] apart."

My Blogging Eagle Facebook posts have tried to indicate to those in Eagles Mere things I am trying to do "to bring the people in the middle together to stop this madness" My posts get about zero likes and comments.

I throw myself on your graces to consider the things I am trying to do and decide whether they are worthy of your support and whether  to urge those in Eagles Mere to think about things they can do "to bring the people in the middle together to stop this madness".

Here are things I've been doing:

In 2022, I made an appeal for there to be house meetups in Eagles Mere. See https://bloggingeagle1.blogspot.com/2022/07/appeal-for-house-meetups.html.
In this appeal I said,
My diagnosis is that the extremes on the two political sides are in control of United States politics and political discourse, and they basically will not agree on anything.
This results in a substantial majority in the middle, who would be amenable to many compromises and agreements that the extremes will not countenance and about which they will not even talk to each other, being disregarded by Congress.

In an August 14th Blogging Eagle Facebook post, I posted the American Bar Association's recently created "Task Force for American Democracy" and its Mission Statement that appears at https://www.americanbar.org/groups/leadership/office_of_the_president/american-democracy/overview/. My post gave a link to https://bloggingeagle1.blogspot.com/2023/08/american-bar-association-task-force-for.html, which indicates what I am doing to do in Alabama to defend democracy.

I learned from Jean Alley's Facebook of the article College Debates and Discourse Program partners with Denison – The Denisonian that quoted her son Luke (who is at Denison), saying
"The program works towards its goal of depolarization through deliberately proposing divisive topics for their debates, student fellow Luke Romeo Alley explained. With its concern for complex issues, the organization seeks to bring students together through constructive dialogue."
I posted The Denisonian article on my Blogging Eagle Facebook on September24th.

On February 21st I started posting about Braver Angels as a "national movement to bridge the partisan divide." Per the email set out at https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/...posting about In Alabama, I am striving to engender depolarizing conversation via the Braver Angels organization (and by other means). See
https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2023/02/braver-angels-birmingham-alliance.html

I hope you consider what I am doing to try "to bring the people in the middle together to stop this madness" worthy of your support and worthy of being considered by others in Eagles Mere for what they can do.

Thank you very much, Richard.

Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck

You previously indicated to me that, if I wanted anything communicated to broadcaster members, I needed to do the communicating directly, and you would not pass on to broadcaster members anything I communicate to you. Is that still the case?
Thank you.

Dear Dr. Welbourne:
I am emailing you in your capacity as Educational Advisor to the Alabama Broadcasters Association.
This week the American Bar Association created a "Task Force for American Democracy" and published a Task Force Mission Statement that appears at https://www.americanbar.org/groups/leadership/office_of_the_president/american-democracy/overview/.
As a predicate for the Task Force, the Mission Statement says:
"Our American democracy is under threat. . .. Clearly, our American democracy is not as strong as we once thought and there are those who seem determined to push it to the breaking point. The time for answers and action is now."
The Mission Statement lists nine things the Task Force will consider and address. These nine things are:
1. Education of our citizenry on the importance of an inclusive, strong, and enduring democracy;
2. Ways to maximize voter confidence and participation in our democratic process;
3. Ways to dis-incentivize irresponsible and extremist rhetoric and positions among elected officials and candidates for elective office;
4. Ways to ensure the administration of elections remains nonpartisan;
5. Ways for ensuring the integrity and the safety of state election officials and workers across the country;
6. Ways in which the press and social media can and should contribute to the promotion and avoid denigration of our democracy;
7. The role cyberspace can play in either promoting or corrupting the American democratic process;

8. Anti-democratic weaknesses and vulnerabilities in the existing manner in which candidates for federal office are elected in this country; and
9. Potential changes in federal, state, and local practices, laws, and constitutions to meet these ends.
I am a retired lawyer and I have sent to the Alabama State Bar an email urging it to undertake supportive activities in Alabama regarding what the American Bar Association Task Force is doing. My email to the Alabama State Bar is set forth below.
I think the broadcaster members of the Alabama Broadcasters Association can help in Alabama regarding what the American Bar Association Task Force is trying to accomplish.
I hope you agree and you will press upon the Alabama Broadcasters Association and its broadcaster members how, in the threat to our democracy: "The time for answers and action is now."
Thank you very much for your attention to this email.

Subject: Will ASB undertake supportive activity in Alabama re ABA Task Force for American Democracy
Dear Terri,
I am an inactive member of the Alabama State Bar.
Yesterday, American Bar Association president Mary Smith announced the creation of an ABA-sponsored Task Force for American Democracy, which announcement was accompanied by the Mission Statement that appears at https://www.americanbar.org/groups/leadership/office_of_the_president/american-democracy/overview/.
I think the Alabama State Bar should undertake supportive activity in Alabama that follows along that which is laid out in the the ABA Task Force's Mission Statement, appropriately limited to and tailored for Alabama.
If the ASB undertakes any such supportive activity, I would like to participate in the same.
I think you are aware that I personally have been considering matters that the Mission Statement lists for addressing by the ABA Task Force, such as at https://al6thcongdist-ihaveuntiljan13.blogspot.com/2023/05/weaponization-of-justice-system.html.
Please let me know if the ASB makes a decision to undertake supportive activity in Alabama in connection with what the ABA Task Force will be doing, and whether I may participate in the ASB's supportive activity.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Rob Shattuck
