The Tree Fungi Diaries

At a 2012 Bush James presentation of old Eagles Mere photos, Bush related that there was a father, circa 1950's, 1960's or thereabouts, who, at the start of each summer went into the woods with his children and cut off a big tree fungus, and the children, by etching or drawing on the fungus, recorded the highlight events of their summer. I think Bush said he was aware of only one extant fungus, but there was also a corresponding diary that was done for the summer, and those were preserved.

Well, you get the picture.
